Thirty years ago, a group of development practitioners seeking to promote economic opportunities for the poor formed the SEEP Network to create a platform for learning and exchange. Beginning with a relatively small group of U.S.-based NGOs and Ibebet Senegal, our network has grown in both size and scope, today representing 132 members operating in more than 170 countries worldwide.

The process has brought about significant discovery. Our historical focus on enterprise development and microfinance has provided the foundation for a more holistic approach to inclusive market development that now engages a much wider range of industry stakeholders, services, and technologies. At the same time, the increasing diversity of our membership presents substantial opportunities for multi-sector action, knowledge creation and sharing, within and across countries and contexts.

The SEEP Network’s 2015 Annual Conference will serve as a platform to highlight this evolution while acknowledging the important challenges still before us. Under the dual theme of Inclusion and Resilience, together we will explore strategies that are extending the frontiers of market development. The productive engagement in market systems of still-marginalized populations including women, poor producers, and otherwise vulnerable or disadvantaged households requires innovation. This includes new methods of financing, sustainable business models, and mutually beneficial partnerships. Promoting resilience is central to this mandate. The ability to respond to shocks is essential to ensuring long term gains for poor households as well as the sustained transformation of markets.
